this Christmas, she contacted us in a desperate situation. Even though she has a job, the overwhelming financial burden of having two other children and paying for childcare for the baby caused Theresa to consider placing Kyle for adoption.
With compassionate understanding, Mary, our Client Services Manager, listened to her tearful story and swung into action to refer her to another organization for additional assistance. Thanks to the donations we receive from local churches we were able to provide her with many baby items, toys and gift cards to help her through the holidays.
My name is Alexa and my son Matthew James was born in 2016. He’s been a wonderful, easy baby and he makes me want to have more!
My pregnancy didn’t start out that easy. When I found out I was pregnant I was devastated and all I could do was cry. I have three children and they were all going to be in school soon, so I was planning to go back to work. I also thought the baby’s father might not stay around, so the timing couldn’t have been worse.
I had already gone to a family planning clinic. They told me about the different procedures available to terminate and asked if I was ready to schedule it, but I couldn’t make that kind of decision right then.
When I came to the Center everyone was kind, loving and warm. They said they would talk to me afterwards, even if I ended up having an abortion. That was comforting.
The nurse said lots of positive things and gave me the information I needed. When I left after the ultrasound exam, i still wasn’t sure what to do. It definitely helped to see the baby moving. After talking it out and praying a lot, I reached a conclusion a few days later — to have the baby.
What I found at the Center was patience, warmth, love and kindness, which is pretty much what every pregnant woman needs. Even thought it wasn’t the way I would have timed ti, everything has worked out well for me, and I’m glad I have my beautiful baby boy.
On Friday, April 8th, the Center was honored by the Torrance Chamber of Commerce with a ribbon cutting celebration, with recognition from the Torrance City Council and Assemblyman David Hadley, who presented a State of California Resolution for 40 years of service to the South Bay Community.
The Center began as a crisis pregnancy hotline in 1971, founded by compassionate women who wanted to help other women experiencing the challenge of a crisis pregnancy. In 1976, the Center opened its doors in its current location as a crisis pregnancy counseling center.
In 1991 the Center was licensed by the State of California as a medical clinic and later expanded services to include breastfeeding and prenatal nutrition education, and STD testing.
In 2013 the Center launched ultrasound services, expanded its hours in order to help more women, and increased the number of staff members to handle the increased client demand.
In it’s 40th Anniversary year, the Center looks forward to launching a sexual integrity program for schools and continuing with its initiative to move to a much needed larger facility.
The 40th Anniversary celebration continues all year, and past volunteers, staff and clients are invited to participate and to contact the Center as soon as possible at 310-320-8976.
Help the Center celebrate our 40th Anniversary and 29th Annual Walk For Life on Saturday, May 21st at 9:00 a.m. at Veterans Park, Redondo Beach. All in the community are welcome to participate by walking or just coming to the park to enjoy a beautiful morning at the beach. Onsite registration will begin at 7:15, and any announcements, raffles or other festivities will take place before the Walk this year, so come early.
A Team Kickoff Celebration will be held the evening of Tuesday, April 5th at the Toyota Museum. More details to come.
